Chives leaves – kind of “longevity vegetable”

Japan has the highest life expectancy in the world. Cyclically calculated every 25 years, Japanese life expectancy increases by at least 4 years with very low morbidity rates. In the 2020 statistics, the average life expectancy of Japanese people has increased to record levels in both sexes (87.74 years for women and 81.64 years for men).

The secret of Japanese longevity is directly related to the daily diet. They especially preferred vegetables such as chives leaves and considered them “immortal dishes”.

In Vietnam, chives are grown quite popularly, are spiced vegetables often used in the preparation of some dishes, they have other names are cuu thai, khoi duong thao. The chives plant has a height of about 20-40cm, has a very characteristic aroma, the plant grows well all year round, is easy to grow and requires little care. You only need to sow or plant with seedlings once, you can harvest many litters, many years. As a nutrient-rich food, chives contain few calories but are high in beneficial nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Chives contain important nutrients, which are good for sleep and bone health. Some studies have also shown that the chemicals in chives have anti-cancer effects.

According to traditional medicine, chives leaf plant is heat-calculating, when cooked, it is temperate, spicy, enters the sutras, tastes and kidneys. Chives leaves have temperate, onion, dispersion and detoxifying effects. Often used in the treatment of chest pain, hiccups, fall injuries … The root of the chives tree is warm, spicy, has a temperate effect, onions, dispersions, often used to treat chest and stomach pain caused by food, hypochondrium, itching … The seeds of the chives tree have warmth, sweet and spicy taste, enter the Can and Kidney sutras, it has a tonic effect, Kidney, positive and deliberate. Often used as a medicine for repeated urination, dreaming, semen, weak knees.

Modern medical research, chives contain many nutrients that are beneficial to health such as:

  • Research has linked diets high in chives to a reduced risk of many types of cancer. Some studies have specifically suggested that vegetables of the allium family, including chives, may have anti-cancer effects.
  • Chives contain a small amount of choline, which is an important substance that helps maintain the structure of cell membranes. In addition, choline also helps improve memory, mood, muscle control and other functions of the brain and nervous system.
  • Chives contain vitamin K, which is important for bone health and blood clotting. Other sources of vitamin K include green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils and fruits including blueberries and figs.
  • Chives also contain folate, an essential nutrient for the prevention of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.
  • The composition of chives contains strong antibiotic active ingredients such as allcin, odorin, sulfite. Thanks to this, they work to cure itchy scabies, ripening, skin infections by applying pounded leaves on wounds; convenient in treating pinworms for children without fear of side effects of neo-remedies.
  • In case of painful gingivitis, chives can also be used to fight inflammation, kill bacteria by pounding and holding in the mouth. Children with ear inflammation can get juice of small chives leaves to kill bacteria.
  • Chives contain many essential nutrients, long-term diabetics with signs of weakness in the body, eating chives is very good, helping to nourish the body and stabilize blood sugar extremely effectively. Daily use from 100-200g of chives, cook porridge, cook soup or stir-fry. Do not use salt or only use a little salt when preparing dishes. 10 days a course. Or you can also use 150g chives root, 100g oyster meat, cook soup regularly.

Although it has many nutritional values, you should not use chives leaves too much at once because it can affect the digestive tract. It is best to eat in control at 100-200g / meal. In addition, you should avoid eating it with some foods such as buffalo meat, beef or honey to limit the negative effects on health. At the same time, to avoid poisoning, when preparing food from chives leaves, it should be used up during the day, do not eat if left overnight.
